How to Add Your Music Back to Your Skating Video

If you’ve received your competition video and noticed there’s no music, you’re not alone. Because of U.S. Figure Skating (USFSA) restrictions, videographers are not allowed to include the competition music in your video. We know this can feel inconvenient, especially when the music is such a big part of your performance.

The good news is it’s actually very easy to add your music back yourself, and you can do it in just a few minutes.

Why the Music Is Removed

Competition music is copyrighted, and event videographers are not licensed to redistribute it in recorded videos. To stay compliant, videos are delivered without sound. But once you have your video, you’re free to add your own music for personal use.

What You’ll Need

Before you start, make sure you have:

  • Your video file (from your event gallery)
  • Your music file (MP3 or similar format)
  • A simple editing app (most phones already have one)

Easy Ways to Add Music

1. Using CapCut (Free & Very Easy)

Great for both iPhone and Android users.

  1. Open the app and tap “New Project”
  2. Upload your skating video
  3. Tap “Audio” → “Sounds” → “From Device”
  4. Add your music file
  5. Line up the music with your starting pose
  6. Export your video

This is one of the quickest and most popular options.

2. Using iMovie (iPhone Users)

  1. Open iMovie and create a new project
  2. Import your video
  3. Tap the “+” icon → Audio → Files
  4. Select your music
  5. Adjust timing so it matches your routine
  6. Export and save

3. Using Adobe Premiere Pro (Advanced Option)

Best if you want precise syncing.

  1. Import your video and music
  2. Drag both into the timeline
  3. Zoom in and align the first beat with your first movement
  4. Trim or adjust as needed
  5. Export your final video

Tips for Perfect Syncing

  • Start your music at the exact moment your routine begins
  • Watch for key beats like jumps, spins, or choreography accents
  • If it feels off, zoom in and adjust frame by frame
  • Don’t stress about perfection—small differences are normal

Final Thoughts

We completely understand how important music is to your performance, and we wish we could include it for you. While the restriction is out of our hands, adding your music back is simple and gives you full control over your final video.
